Lloyd Kaplan – 2018

In the mid-1960s, the music educator and jazz musician was instrumental in shaping the the future of the music department at CCRI where he remained for 31 years teaching and mentoring hundreds of student.

For this season, the Board decided to begin building an exhibit which will honor our dedicated educators – the teachers in the public school and college classrooms. The first name on that list was Lloyd Kaplan. Over the course of more than five decades, Lloyd has mentored thousands of music students and has nurtured the careers of several generations of New England musicians. After graduating from the University of Rhode Island, Lloyd began his career as a music educator in the Cranston Public Schools from 1960 to 1965 during which time he earned his Master’s Degree at Brown University. After a year at Scituate Junior-Senior High, he moved into the college level in 1966 at both the Brown University Extension for two years and the Community College of Rhode Island where he remained for 31 years. Professor Kaplan was instrumental in shaping the future of the music department at CCRI introducing the Jazz Curriculum as a degree program and instituting courses in Twentieth Century Music, Introduction to Opera, Jazz History and others. He also served as department Chair from 1974 to 1980. He retired in 1995 as Professor Emeritus. Lloyd also persued a career as a professional clarinet and saxophone player in a wide variety of settings including the U.S. Army Band, the Tony Abbott Orchestra and his own jazz group, The Aristocats. In his quote-unquote “retirement,” Lloyd continues teaching at URI and Coastal Carolina University and he continues performing.
